Morning!

It is with great pleasure and huge excitement that I can now announce that, as of April 27th, I will have a weekly hip hop and spoken word show on XFM!

I confirmed all of this a week or two back and have been itching to announce it!

Let me start by giving a little history…

When dan and I started off he did a few remixes of tracks from my solo record “No Commercial Breaks”. These went down well so we decided to try writing a track together. That track was called “Thou Shalt Always Kill”. Dan sent me a beat and I recorded a vocal I had been playing about with at spoken word shows over it. This was recorded in my bed room at my mums house. Around that time I had done a few shows with Kate Nash and she had liked our stuff and recommended we send it to John Kennedy at XFM. As soon as Thou Shalt was recorded we sent one CDR with hand written tracklisting in to John Kennedy and didnt really think too much about it.

The day he received this track he played it on his show. No waiting to fit it into the schedule. No getting in contact with us. He was excited, so he played it. The reaction he got was amazing and he promptly made it his XFM Xposure Hot One.

For two lads that hadnt really had anyone hear our stuff yet…this was amazing. I mean, his excitement and passion KINDA sucked as it meant we never got to hear our first ever bit of radio play…but…y’know. That was literally the launch point of what has so far been an amazing career for us both as a duo and individually, so when the opportunity came to join such a station and work alongside the likes of John Kennedy, aswell as Eddy Temple Morris and others that have been a huge inspiration, it was something I was never going to turn down.

The Beatdown will be 1hr, at midnight every Saturday, in which I will get a chance to give some airplay to some of my favourite Hip Hop and spoken word. It amazes me that people like Sage Francis, Atmosphere, Brother Ali, Killer Mike, B Dolan and many others come and tour the UK, playing to thousands, and dont really get any love from the airwaves. That is to be rectified.

Also, having run the Satin Lizard Lounge spoken word tent at fesitvals for 4 or 5 years now, I have seen how spoken word has grown and started to attract crowds growing from the hundreds into thousands and that to doesnt seem to have a home on the airwaves. Another thing that is about to change!

So I wont ramble on any more as I will save some of this for the first show!

I will end this ramble by thanking Eddy Temple Morris for having the idea of such a thing happening and everyone at XFM that has seen promise in the idea and brought it to life!

Be sure to join me for the launch on Saturday April 27th at midnight (for alll my MMA heads its perfect build up for Jones v Sonnen)!

Pip

Hello!
So this is very exciting!
This August, for the first time, I will be doing a run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival!
This is a HUGE deal to me as I am a massive fan of stand up and have always wanted to attend, let alone perform my stuff there.
Let me give a little history of how this has come about…
Last summer (2012) I was asked to do a 60 minute headline slot at the Latitude Poetry tent. It was a Saturday night so competition was stiff and, when I went back stage having been watching out the front for an hour or so, I was delighted with the 200 – 300 people that were in the tent. After getting ready and being announced, I took the stage to find around 4000 people waiting for the set! I was obviously blown away by this.
Whats more, they stayed from begining to end and, on a Saturday night, watched a full hour of spoken word poetry.
Due to how stunned I was by this I decided, in December 2012 to do a 13 date tour of the spoken word show that I was now calling “Words”.
I recorded an early version of it at the Royal Albert hall and released that, again, to an overwhelming reception.
Over this 13 date tour I was stunned (using a lot of the same terms here arent I… its a blog god dammit, dont judge me) to see the reactions and turn outs everywhere we went. The whole tour was rammed, with 11 of the shows selling out before we had even got going!
As the tour went on the show developed into a tighter set and, through different instances of banter it really started to feel like a complete show, rather than just a collevtion of poems. I have always liked the process of inserting humour inbetween what are often quite dark poems and that really started to tighten up along the way. I feel it helps in many ways to make the evening a more enjoyable night out and, at the same time, increase the impact when the switch is flicked and serious subjects are presented.
Being a long time lover of stand up comedy I was delighted when comedians I am a huge fan of like Tim Key and Brett Goldstein attended along the way.
When the tour was over I caught up with a few of them and they all seemed to feel “Words” would work well at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Having originally intended to do it as a one off set, then ending up touring and recording it, when I was approached by the guys at the Pleasance it seemed like the perfect opportunity to give this show a warm farewell.
Hopefully many of you will be able to come along and enjoy the show!
It is important to me that it isnt some dusty, boring poetry recital. When selecting a venue, I chose the Ace Dome partly due to the fact it has a bar!
You should be getting drunk and enjoying your evening. Hopefully you will experience a range of emotions but, most importantly, have a good night out.
I very much look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in August.
You can order tickets now from here…

Well I havent written a blog in AGES so I apologise in advance that this will probably be very poorly written.
My reason for writing is a series of events that unfolded on my instagram and twitter this past Friday night.
It all started with me posting this picture of a t-shirt I recently purchsed… http://instagram.com/p/Q970mQRbi4/
The t-shirt has pictures of Sarah Lund (from Danish TV series The Killing) and Saga Norén (from Swedish/Danish TV series The Bridge) along with the slogan “Scandinavian Autistic Cops: Fighting Crime. Struggling in Social Situations”.
This is a favourite t-shirt of mine as these were two of my favourite shows of recent years (if you didnt catch them I suggest you do).
Much to my shock and dismay, certain people found this t-shirt offensive.
Let me be clear from the start: I do not feel that this t-shirt is in anyway mocking or being offensive to autism or those who suffer from it.
Saga Norén, in particular, is a hugely positive character. She is the autistic lead character in The Bridge and is a successful and respected detective. What the series doesnt shy away from, however, is the situations and trials that autism brings on a day to day basis for an adult living and working in society.
After The Killing became huge numerous writers and reviewers believed that Sarah Lund showed many signs of (potentially undiagnosed) autism.
The fact that these discussions were taking place, and that these characters where being praised was, in my opinion, a very positive thing.
Autism is something that is widely misunderstood and something of a mystery to many of the general public. I feel this is partly because it isnt REALLY addressed much in the general day to day media and partly because… well it can be quite confusing! The varying scales and effects of it make it quite hard for those who dont encounter it on a day to day basis to really understand. It is, indeed, hard to understand for many of those that DO encounter it on a day to day basis.
This is why it is my opinion that the coverage and serious, open discussion of things like this through formats such as drama and, indeed social networking sites like twitter and instagram is a very positive thing.
There has recently, however, been a spate of instances where celebrities, musicians and comedians have used the term “autistic” as an insult or as the basis of some kind of mockery. I am generally of the belief that all things should be open to the medium of comedy BUT I can also see that subjects that are as widely misunderstood as this can suffer hugely from such things. If the first you hear of autism is as the butt of some kind of joke then you will struggle to ever really understand the seriousness and complexity of it.
I remember in my youth the term “flid” being thrown around and for years I knew of it only as an insult without even knowing anything about the thalidomide disaster from which this term was bastardized.
Due to this, I can understand when my posting of this t-shirt was met with anger by several people who encounter autism on a daily basis and, indeed, campaign for a greater understanding and respect to be shown to it. They explained that, whilst I may have some level of understanding of it and, from knowing the characters portrayed, understand that this is infact a POSITIVE portrayal of those with the condition or autism… many of my followers and people viewing this image would NOT know that. Some would see this as simply a funny thing to say or have on a t-shirt.
It was due to all of this that I wanted to write this blog to use what reach I may have to, not only explain my choice of t-shirt, but also to encourage more open discussion and, in turn, greater understanding of this condition.
I hope this all made sense and, again, apologies for the sloppiness of this post!
I haven’t written a blog in sometime and don’t REALLY understand the format and layout of this all. But this was something I wanted to share, regardless of how crudely written.
All the best

So it is August 3rd! This means I am now 30 years of age.
To all you youngsters: I’m officially old now.
To all you oldsters: I still have my youth!
I have decided to celebrate this day by giving YOU all a gift. On September 19th i release my new solo record on my own label, Speech Development (with a little help from Strange Famous in the USA) so, today, I have decided to let you see and hear the first teaser track!
“Introdiction” will be the opening track on “Distraction Pieces” and was produced by Danny Lohner aka Renholder of NIN & Perfect Circle fame. And he even managed to rope in Mila Jovovich to do some “oooo’ing” for the backing vocals!
On Monday some friends and I shot a video for £100.
Here it is.
Enjoy (and please share/comment/post EVERYWHERE).
Introdiction – Scroobius Pip
Cheers everyone!
It is my great pleasure to welcome you all to my pimping new website! Have a good ole look around!

Hello!

It is my great pleasure to welcome you all to my lovely new website! Have a good ole look around!

In the next few months there is going to be a LOT going on with my forth coming solo stuff! New t-shirts, new music, new videos, new live shows and much much more. There is loads that I can’t REALLY talk about at this point but what CAN I tell you…

hmmmmmm…

I can tell you the album will be called “Distraction Pieces”, that it will be the first proper release on my very own label “Speech Development” and that this website is based on the artwork.

I can tell you that the first live preview of the new material will be at Hoxton Bar & Kitchen on August 18th and that I will have Sound of Rum there to get the party going with a bang.

I can tell you that you can pre-order the album here in my new store now AND you can order my brand new t-shirt aswell!

I can tell you that I will let you all hear (and see) a little teaser track next week on August 3rd as that is my 30th Birthday so I thought I ought to give you all a present.

I can tell you that most bits will be revealed 1st over at facebook.com/scroobiuspip so that the exclusives come DIRECTLY to you lot rather than giving them to some website (go and get “like” ‘ing).

I can also stress here and now that there WILL be a third le sac vs Pip record! Don’t worry! We havent split up!
Right, I think that is everything for now!

Have fun strolling around the site and see all the wonders hidden with in it.

More to come soon!

Pip
